The CIDOC CRM Special Interest Group (SIG) cordially invites institutions and colleagues to consider joining its international community, which is responsible for the development, maintenance, and governance of the CIDOC CRM under the aegis of ICOM Documentation (formerly CIDOC), a committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
The CIDOC CRM has reached a high level of maturity and wide adoption across the cultural heritage sector. The work of the SIG brings together institutions and experts engaged in research, documentation, and information integration related to the human past. Members contribute to the evolution of the model and its extensions through an open, voluntary, and collaborative process.
Institutional membership in the SIG is based on contributions in kind, primarily through participation in meetings, working groups, and ongoing discussions. The activities of the SIG are supported by its member institutions and are closely aligned with the broader work of ICOM Documentation. Moreover, its work is guided by community-agreed bylaws that define its scope, roles, and procedures, ensuring transparent, open, and accountable governance in line with the regulations of ICOM Documentation. The SIG meets twice a year, with meetings held in a hybrid format to enable both in-person and remote participation.
This invitation is extended at a significant moment in the life of the SIG. After many years of dedicated service, Martin Doerr (Chair) and Christian-Emil Ore (Co-Chair) are stepping down from leadership roles. Their contributions have been instrumental in shaping both the intellectual foundations and the international standing of the CIDOC CRM. The SIG is now entering a new phase of shared stewardship, with an emphasis on active participation, complementary expertise, and continuity across generations, while maintaining the rigour and professional standards that have long characterised its work.
We are therefore particularly keen to welcome institutions that wish to:
- contribute to the ongoing development and application of the CIDOC CRM and its extensions;
- participate in a forum for exchange among initiatives using, or planning to use, the model, our method, and/or work on CIDOC CRM pedagogical issues;
- support an open, international, and community-driven standards process.
Institutions or individuals interested in becoming members are warmly invited to get in touch. Detailed information on the application process is available at: https://cidoc-crm.org/become-a-sig-member
If you are passionate about information integration for cultural heritage and the CIDOC CRM as a standard, please come and make your voice heard. The CIDOC CRM is its active and engaged community.
