Quantification of AP2 discarded into (was discarded by)

3 - Changes in the CIDOC CRM model
Done

In the 46th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 39th FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting and upon reviewing the quantification of AP2, the sig decided to move this discussion in a new issue. The quantification of the property must explore the following possibilities:
(i)    many instances of S11 Amount of Matter are removed and discarded into one heap (in which case it must be differentiated form O2 removed and from O5 removed (this one for sample taking).
(ii)    the exact amount of matter that was removed in the course of an excavation process unit. However, if the amounts of matter are subsequently discarded in a heap, and this move is documented for some reason, then another property will have to be coined, that lumps the amounts of matter together.
(iii)    the amount of matter discarded instantiates the heap, which means that AP2 should be used to document the excavation process units that fed into the heap.

Athens, February 2020

In the 49th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and SO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 42nd FRBR – CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting, the sig decided in favor of the proposal to delete

  • O2 removed [D: S1 Matter Removal, R: S11 Amount of Matter] from the list of subproperties of O1 diminished [D: S1 Matter Removal, R: S10 Material Substantial] AND
  • O1 diminished [D: S1 Matter Removal, R: S10 Material Substantial] from the list of superproperties of O2 removed [D: S1 Matter Removal, R: S11 Amount of Matter]

to fix the inconsistency btw AP1 and AP2. Reaching a decision re. AP2 or introducing a 3rd property is considered premature at this stage. The issue will be discussed again in the next SIG meeting.

In the 52nd joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and ISO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 45th FRBR - CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting; CEO presented HW re. (1) the quantification of AP2 and (2) the addition of a new property to document the heap produced by the instance of S11 Amount of Matter that (AP2i was discarded) in the course of an A1 Excavation Process Unit.

(1) quantification of AP2
change from one-to-many (0,n:0,1) to many-to-many (0,n:0,n)

(2) APxx discarded into (was discarded by) [D:A1, R:S11] [definition of new property here]
Discussion points:
* suggested property documents pseudo-sampling procedures in excavations (different tests run for different heaps, but the knowledge of what heap was used in which sampling procedure needs be documented)

Overall decision:

  • accept the quantification for AP2,
  • introduce APxx discarded into (was discarded by) [D:A1, R:S11] in CRMarchaeo, assign it No Ap29.
  • Start a new issue to discuss the new property (AP29 discarded into) and its quantification -extend its scope note by adding a clause in it that explains why the quantification is set to many to many

February 2022

In the 53rd CIDOC CRM & 46th FRBRoo SIG meeting, the SIG decided to formally close the issue, on the grounds of there being nothing left to do:

  • a new property (AP32 discarded into) has been introduced to CRMarchaeo
  • AP2 has been renamed “discarded” to mark the heap removed in the course of an excavation process unit

the quantification of both properties have been determined (for AP2 in this issue, for AP32 in issue 584)

May 2022

584   AP32 discarded into -scope note refinement (formerly called AP29 by mistake)
474   Editorial check of changes in CRMarcheo
447   A7 Embedding as a Physical Feature like entity
